Even as we imagine a new crop of memories forming in the bright faces on the school buses that pass, or the bookbag-laden students walking in our midst, may we figure out a way to honor our own moonlit memories and flitting moments in the sun.
Back-to-school memories, like gently falling leaves, settle around us beneath August’s almost-supermoon,Fishing…school…a coincidence? I think not: Just another pun.And then we start again, the cycle of waning and waxing.One of the fun things about my school days was the walk to and from the elementary, and later “junior high.” I miss the friends, the camaraderie, and the super-firm leg muscles!
Whether it was the quarter-mile to Coventry Elementary or the longer trek to Roosevelt Junior High, I remember. And on Facebook fellow students -- both younger and older -- gather to jog their own memory banks. While looking back, there is also the shock of learning of cherished members of my class who have died.Though school brought challenges and struggles, pressures and dilemmas, it also brought the wonderful gifts of friendship. As my school grew geographically more distant from my home, so did the homes of friends. But a smile, and joint angst about the geometry test, transcends distance.
