Close-up of a frightened Maddie.
The ghosts of Split River High School are back to haunt our screens again in the third season of School Spirits. The show has expanded from the humble whodunnit that first captured viewers' attention, where recently"deceased" Maddie tried to solve her murder with the help of her afterlife support group and her unique link to the world of the living, her best friend Simon .
Since then, we've discovered that Maddie wasn't murdered, but her body was stolen by another spirit, Janet . Unlike what Mr. Martin implied, Janet, his science student and protégée, hadn't crossed over, and that was simply an excuse to hide the fact that she escaped. Throughout Season 2, Maddie's spirit team and Simon's alive team work together to locate Janet in hopes of returning Maddie to her physical state, but in doing so, they uncover disturbing secrets hidden in the supernatural fabric of the school. So, before we're possessed by School Spirits Season 3, here's everything you need to remember. 'School Spirits' Season 2 Ends on a Devastating Cliffhanger At the beginning of School Spirits Season 2, Mr. Martin runs away when Maddie regains her memories of the night Janet stole her body after an argument with him. He escapes through the scars of the school, an alternate dimension-like network that connects each room where a person has died. When the ghosts enter the scars, their worst memories and likely the reason they haven't crossed over manifest in ominous red lighting. Mr. Martin and Janet had been performing experiments on these scars, which will be explained later, but during this process, Janet grew sympathetic to the other ghosts and shouldered Mr. Martin's subtle cruelty by herself. So, when Simon's team tries to lure Janet to the school, she ends up voluntarily arriving with them to exchange Maddie's body. She also helps Mr. Anderson steal his body back from Mr. Martin, who had hijacked it in hopes of starting a new life with Janet. When Janet steps out of Maddie's body, it seems like all will be well until Mr. Martin drags Janet back into her scar. The ghost team spread out to use the network of scars to track them down, but Maddie is torn between helping her newfound friends or returning to the body. In the nick of time, and after a horrifying moment in her own trauma-filled scar, she manages to both save Janet and return to her body. Related 'School Spirits' Season 3 Takes Its Darkest Turn Yet With More Horror and "Sinister" Villains The cast join us for an exclusive Q&A about the shows all-new dynamics, character journeys, and what fans can expect this season. Posts By Tamera Jones When Maddie wakes up in the hospital, finally in her physical form, she and her friends wonder where Simon is. Turns out, when Maddie was wildly running towards her body, which was slowly approaching the borders of the school grounds towards an ambulance, Simon had run back into the basement to find Maddie. The final scenes of the season give us a terrifying glimpse of Simon's face, cast in the same red light that indicates he was trapped in a scar — Mr. Martin's scar, specifically. Does that mean he's now dead and trapped, or is it part of his strange spiritual connection to the afterlife? School Spirits Season 3 has another mystery to solve. Romance and Friendships Blossom in 'School Spirits' Season 2 While Simon and Maddie essentially swap lives by the end of School Spirits Season 2, the other characters fare a little better, relatively speaking. In the alive group, Claire is firmly transformed from Maddie's number one murder suspect to a part of the gang, where her romance with Xavier also completely fizzles out. Xavier also develops a a special connection, somewhere between friendship and romance, with Nicole after they realize they were actually talking to each other anonymously online. After a couple of relapses, Maddie's mother is also on an upward trajectory, which will hopefully continue now that Maddie is back in the world of the living. But Maddie and Simon are now not the only ones with a bond to the afterlife, as when Xavier died on the hospital bed a couple of seconds after the accident, he saw a host of ghosts in the waiting room. Now, when he returns to the hospital to visit Maddie, he reveals his experience and that he can see her late father. If being able to communicate somewhat with a father she mourns isn't rattling enough, Maddie also has to contend with the heartache of leaving Wally in the past after their sweet and innocent romance. On top of that, we also witness Wally heal his inner turmoil and come across his exit door in his scar, suggesting he can cross over, but we don't see what he chooses to do. 'School Spirits' Sets Up Supernatural Mysteries in Season 3 Thus far, we have learned a fair amount about the supernatural afterlife system in this world, but the finale suggests there is far more to uncover. Much of School Spirits' supernatural system revolves around the scars, where ghosts can enter their own by using key objects they died with. Janet also theorized that trauma fuels energy in this realm, and thus, Mr. Martin hoped to overpower the boundaries around the school by tricking everyone into going into their own scars, forcing them to confront their traumas to short-circuit the system. IIt was part of their investigation into crossing over, but from what we've seen, it seems that healing one's trauma is the key to crossing over. When Janet learns that it was Mr. Martin, not her, who caused the school fire that killed them in the '50s, she manages to heal her guilt and manifest the exit door to cross over. But in the finale, she deigns to do so and instead stays to learn more secrets about the afterlife, including the intriguing question that Mr. Martin proposes about why so many people die at this school. She also alludes to the fact that ghosts can learn more powerful abilities and offers to teach the ghost group. As such, going into Season 3, there are still plenty of mysteries festering underneath the surface of River Split High's reality. From Simon's fate to whether or not the school attracts death, School Spirits is certainly not slowing down in its worldbuilding and character arcs.
