The founder of a program designed to help high school students break the cycle of domestic and family violence ensures they are heard in a way she never was.

Youth homelessness charity Youth Off The Streets is behind the unique DFV intervention program Power Within.Plans are underway to roll out the program further afield, tackling youth homelessness due to family violence.The founder of a program designed to help high school students break the cycle of domestic and family violence ensures they are heard in a way she never was.

Ms Sharp developed Power Within for youth-based charity Youth Off The Streets which runs across six of its alternative schools in Sydney, the Illawarra, and at The Lakes College at Blue Haven, north of Wyong. " a very weird feeling in the beginning and then it starts feeling normal. Then you start literally growing from it — changing," Emily said.Studies show young people who are exposed to domestic violence do not have to actually see it to be affected both physically and emotionally.Evidence also shows children who experience domestic violence are also more likely themselves to use violence or be in controlling relationships as adults.

In 2023, almost 2,000 domestic violence-related conversations were had with 177 students across YOTS' schools.Last year alone they reported 95 incidents of DFV. "We can work with young people in our care but there's a much wider issue that everyone's aware of," Mr Martin said.Emily said any extra support for young people could only be a good thing.
