Information about the student-led event was 'twisted and demonized,' district Superintendent Jeffrey Moore said.

Critics of the drag show held at Hunterdon Central Regional High School compared it to lewd adult entertainment and argued it was a symptom of “preoccupation with ideology and sexuality at the expense of academia.”“When people say that we can’t support our students in a project like this because there are pedophiles hiding in our community, and we’re serving their agenda to hurt our kids, I’m sorry — I don’t think we’re living on the same planet,” Moore said last month.

The drag show organized by P.U.L.S.E was just one of its many student-led events. The club also recognizes Ally Week, LGBTQ History Month, Transgender Day of Remembrance, World AIDS Day, and the Day of Silence, according to“The club plays a vital role in making Hunterdon Central safer for our LGBTQ students by providing supportive and accepting spaces, as well as doing broader organizing work against homophobia and transphobia in our school and community,” according to the district website.

“This was supposed to be a fun and safe activity,” Nina said. Instead, “P.U.L.S.E has received a lot of hate and backlash from parents and community members trying to malign the club.” In response to concerns about the loss of instructional time and equity raised by a group of Hunterdon Central staff, Tucker said the same concern has never been shown for lost instructional time as a result of school athletics or other mainstream extracurriculars.
