San Diego County public school enrollment fell by 1 percent compared to last year and is down 5 percent since 2019

San Diego County public schools are continuing a five-year streak of declining student enrollment, but this year’s enrollment drops were not as severe as the drops faced during the first two years of COVID-19.

San Diego County school enrollment is now down 5 percent from 2019. Currently about 476,800 students attend public schools in the county, with the vast majority attending district schools; about 17 percent attend charters, which are run independently of districts. The state data released Tuesday represent enrollment as of the first week of October 2022, which is when schools recorded an annual census day count of students.
