A Kappa League step dancing competition featuring high school and grade school stepping teams is expected to draw a crowd of over 1,200 people Saturday at Southland College Prep in Richton Park.

Members of the step team at Southland College Prep in Richton Park rehearse Wednesday at the school in Richton Park, where officials expect about 1,200 people to show up for a step dancing competition Saturday that's drawing squads from throughout the Chicago area.

Jeff Egbuna, of Matteson, and his teammates on the step team at Southland College Prep practice their routine Wednesday as they prepare to exhibit their skills Saturday when their school hosts a competition in Richton Park. Though the dance form is thought to have originated in the African American cultural milieu, it’s gaining purchase everywhere, Levy said, noting a participating group from Yorkville High School “is an all Caucasian team except for one African American,” he said.

“It’s done that way so the hosts don’t have that home field advantage,” Levy said. “We’ll be doing an exhibition.”He said judges come from the Divine Nine Greek Letter organizations, which are historically made up of Black students.
