A high school counselor has been arrested for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a student.
The RPD said 35-year-old Derik Detweiler , of Kenmore, was taken into custody without incident in Cody, Wyoming, on Thursday. Detweiler will remain in custody until he is extradited back to Washington.
“We are thankful to the student for having the courage to come forward, as this relationship likely would have continued,” Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe said. “We encourage parents to have conversations with their children that if they hear or see something concerning, they should tell a trusted adult immediately. We also remind parents to monitor their children’s social media activity and report anything suspicious.
According to court documents, the relationship has been going on for months and the two communicated through WhatsApp. The student also told police Detweiler showed the student his guns at his home and showed her how to load and unload the pistols.The student also told police they had dinner at Detweiler’s home, and he served her several glasses of wine until she felt intoxicated, and then he started to kiss her.
