The 'Read with Pride' guide is devoted to educating teachers on 'LGBTQIA+ youth and books.'

The guide opens with a message thanking the reader for their “allyship.” It continues by noting “you absolutely know queer children and interact with them in your classroom,” while also acknowledging difficulties in obtaining accurate statistics on LGBT youth.

Books and literature are never neutral,” the guide reads. “By engaging with queer literature for children and young adults, you are disrupting the status quo that implies being cisgender, heterosexual, and allosexual are the default. You are showing children an expanded way of thinking and being that validates all children and people.”

Included in the guide is a glossary of terms including “allocishet,” “demiboy/demigirl” and “gender euphoria.” It notes “the terms in this glossary are widely accepted amongst LGBTQIA+ people at the time of this printing.” Following this is a list of books separated by age group, which includes picture book recommendations for children aged 0-8.of featured titles including LGBT themes. Included on the list is “Be you, little monster,” a title intended for “babies and toddlers,” and “Heartstopper,” a book about a gay couple wanting “to take their relationship to the next level," according to descriptions.of a decision to create an isolated collection of diverse titles to offer at school book fairs.
