Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) predicted the United States federal government will shut down next month due to GOP hardliners.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy , who had to capitulate to the far Right portion of their caucus to ensure he received the speaker's gavel, is facing a similar situation where the House Freedom Caucus can exert their power in numbers, though the California Republican has urged his colleagues to back a short-term spending deal to avoid an Oct. 1 shutdown, according to CNN.
The Senate and the House will reconvene after its August recess, which provides lawmakers with a tight timeline to resolve major differences over funding the government before the shutdown could begin. They will have to work together to pass a short-term spending bill that postpones the fight until potentially early December.
One House Republican, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene , said she would vote against funding the government if the House of Representatives did not open an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden. Despite strong support within the party for such a maneuver, McCarthy has held off for now.“To open an impeachment inquiry is a serious matter, and House Republicans would not take it lightly or use it for political purposes.
