The creatures travel via a unique mechanism called “ ballooning,” according to Penn State University. They use gossamer threads to catch the wind and sail to a new location.

FILE - The Joro spider, a large spider native to East Asia, is seen in Johns Creek, Ga., on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2021. Researchers say the large spider that proliferated in Georgia in 2021 could spread to much of the East Coast.

The spiders were discovered in Georgia in 2014 and have taken root in the U.S., according to an Oct. 12 release from the university. Coyle worked on the study with other researchers, using 20 variables to model how the Joro spider would fare in the U.S. given its typical native habitat in East Asia. University of Georgia entomologist Will Hudson also began investigating the spiders after seeing them in his yard.

Researchers are still working to understand the spiders’ impact. Coyle said they can look at metrics such as whether other varieties of spiders are less common in areas where Joro spiders are found.
