New set reports suggest Scarlett Johansson is cast as a grounded, serious version of Poison Ivy in the upcoming Batman sequel, targeting Gotham's elite as a plant-obsessed serial killer. This would be the first onscreen portrayal of Zsasz and a darker take on Ivy.
Matt Reeves' upcoming Batman sequel has already assembled a stellar cast, including Robert Pattinson as Batman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
Scarlett Johansson was confirmed to be joining the film, but her exact role remained speculative. Recent set details, however, may have revealed that she is portraying an iconic villain. A user named dborn1 posted on a fan forum claiming to have information from the film's set, stating that Johansson is playing the main villain-a serial killer obsessed with plants who uses toxins.
This description aligns with a grounded take on Poison Ivy, who targets Gotham's elite, including the leader of a secret organization played by Charles Dance. The post sparked varied reactions, with many expressing excitement about the casting. When Johansson's casting was first announced, two prevailing theories emerged: she would play Gilda Gold, the wife of Harvey Dent, or Andrea Beaumont, the Phantasm.
Reports initially locked in on the Gold theory, especially when speculation suggested that Theo Rossi was playing Harvey Dent. Later rumors shifted, indicating that Rossi might actually be portraying the serial killer Victor Zsasz. This made the Gilda theory still plausible, though less central. The new set report instead claims Johansson is Poison Ivy and Rossi is Zsasz.
If true, this would mark the first live-action appearance of Zsasz and only the second time Poison Ivy has appeared, following Uma Thurman's campy portrayal in Batman & Robin. The new interpretation promises a more realistic and serious take on the character. The credibility of the report is bolstered by the poster's note that codenames were used on set, meaning some details are inferred from overheard dialogue or observed behavior.
Additionally, a moderator named VarkingRunesong confirmed that the user provided evidence to the moderation team before the thread went live, lending some weight to the claims. However, until official confirmation arrives, these remain unverified rumors. A Johansson-led Poison Ivy, especially in a gritty Reeves aesthetic alongside other villains like Zsasz and the Penguin, presents an intriguing and fresh direction for the franchise
