) - If you received a text message this week claiming you owe a traffic fine at the Alabama Department of Vehicles, heads up - it was a scam. City leaders in Tuscaloosa said their municipal court took more than 50 phone calls this week from concerned neighbors - and Tuscaloosa wasn’t alone.
The scam comes in the form of a text, threatening anyone with prosecution and a hit on your credit score. The sender claims it’s from the Alabama Department of Vehicles, or DMV. The problem - such an entity doesn’t exist in Alabama. “We’re getting a lot of calls now,” said Jessica Steward, Tuscaloosa municipal court administrator. “We got over 50 calls yesterday for people thinking they had tickets in this court that are outstanding. Most are not, but with those text messages going out, it’s very generic. It does not list jurisdiction.”Helen Hays is the public information director for the county. “Our revenue department got several calls. It was so alarming to them they reached out and thought it was the best interest of our citizens that we put something out there,” said Hays.“The county is never going to call to threaten you or scare you into paying a fine or anything like or ask for personal information,” said Hays. Neither Helen Hays nor Jessica Steward know who is sending the texts and the one you see here isn’t the only version being sent.“It references some Alabama code section, but it has no information for the individual,” said Steward. So far, no reports of anyone falling for the scheme. Steward says the texts seem to come from different senders, different email addresses, different international phone numbers, none from legitimate phone numbers.Suspect indicted in 2023 death of Montgomery musician3 bodies found in investigation of missing Choc family, Mobile County officials say
