Sayville Schools anticipates layoffs as district faces budget loss of at least $3.4M

District officials say 18 teachers will retire this year and that many of those positions may not be filled.

Parents say if proposed layoffs go through, it will only make things harder on the teachers that stay. "All the teachers that we've worked with have been really good...there's a lot of kids already," says Jill Corso, a parent in the district. "It's hard to manage that many kids so I think a class size increase could be hard."

District officials also say they have managed to save student programs from being eliminated in their proposed budgets, which will be presented during next week's board meeting. “The school district put a lot of effort into making sure that students get what they need and deserve," says Superintendent Dr. Marc Ferris.
