He responded by indicating that he now believed there was room for people for and against Israel. Sayed then shifted the conversation to financial support for Israel, portraying his objections as a common-sense opposition to using tax dollars on anyone but Americans.
“Whatever you think about the right of Israel to exist, I wonder if they have a right to our tax dollars. And here’s the thing about it: Every time I come on CNN, you guys ask me the same questions about these theoretical rights of existence, or whether or not I agree with the mayor of New York. I’m running for Senate in Michigan, and in Michigan, people can’t afford their basic needs.
They don’t get the health care they need and deserve,” he said. The focus on Israel and “something happening 6,000 miles away,” Sayed said, wasn’t important to the interests of Michiganers. Sayed’s pivot to push the issue of Israel to the background comes as the party continues to grapple with how to handle Israel after facing three years of sustained pressure from younger, progressive activists who accuse the Jewish state of committing genocide and being an apartheid state.
The issue has come to consume much of the party’s energy, with hardly a Democratic event going by without disruptions from pro-Palestinian activists.
