Education was a priority for Saweetie's Filipino-Chinese mother. “My mom's a tiger mom,” she says, using the term popularized by Amy Chua in her 2011 memoir,which details a Chinese mother raising her two daughters as a strict disciplinarian. Saweetie's mother would make her rewrite homework assignments if she thought the penmanship was sloppy. “She wanted straight A's. Her disciplining me at a young age got me into the habit of achieving high goals.
At the time, Saweetie wrote in her notebook to cope with the unique family structure. “Growing up, I was confused a lot," she recalls. "Like, I would get mad. I think my parents not being together really just affected me emotionally as a child, and I carried that stress and disappointment [when I was] a teenager. I used poetry as a way to express myself.”Another form of expression was a unifying element between the sides of Saweetie’s family: Food and music are love languages for both.
At 13 years old, Saweetie sampled fame on a local level because of her sports accolades. She had already started going by Saweetie, a nickname given to her by her grandmother and also her display name on Myspace. From house parties to classrooms, people name-checked her. Being named female athlete of the year for participating in football, track and field, and volleyball at Monterey Trail High School in Elk Grove boosted her popularity.
