A new technique that reroutes the blood flow to the legs and feet using healthy veins to bypass blocked arteries may soon change that, saving the limbs and often the lives of people with diabetes.

LimFlow therapy can prevent foot or lower leg amputation and promote wound healing. The LimFlow procedure turns a vein, which normally carries blood away from the foot, into an artery, which delivers blood to the foot, improving circulation and supplying oxygen to dying tissue .CLEVELAND, Ohio— Amputations of the toes, feet or lower legs are one of the devastating costs of diabetes.

She had accidentally nicked the skin of her toe while trimming her nails, and that was enough to start an infection that refused to heal. Dr. Shishehbor first tried to clear the blockage and save the foot using traditional methods, but was unsuccessful. That something was a clinical trial, testing out a new technique to restore blood flow in the legs and feet. It works by converting healthy veins, which normally carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart and lungs, into arteries.

Cindy Elford, who managed to save one leg thanks to the new procedure, is now completely healed and pain free. . “The pain before was excruciating. It got to the point that I told them, ‘just take my foot’,” recalled Elford. But she said she’s glad she held out for the trial, because four years later, she’s completely healed and pain free.In patients with advanced artery disease like Elford, as many as a third require and amputation, said Shishehbor. The Amputee Coalition of America estimates more than 500 patients undergo an amputation every day.
