For those interested, the Cleveland Seed Bank is hosting its 8th annual seed swap on Saturday, Jan. 28, in St. Patrick’s Parish Hall in Ohio City. The swap is free and open to the public.
I asked Chris if the organization does any screening of the seeds varieties to ensure they will grow successfully in Northeast Ohio, and he said that the act of seed saving itself is how varieties get adapted to the region. “The seed will remember your garden and grow better next year if you pick the ones that do best in your garden,” he explained, and one goal of the Cleveland Seed Bank is to help create a regionally adapted seed supply and network of seed savers.
Seed saving is not only essential for us, it can be our legacy to future generations. Several readers have written to me about seeds they have saved from prior generations and faraway lands. As Chris reminds us, “Every seed tells a story.”and we only go to the trouble when we want to ensure the survival of a plant we treasure.Seed swapping is almost as old as seed saving, and it is a great way to find new favorite plants and ensure diversity in all of our gardens.
. Members of the Cleveland Seed Bank can enter the swap an hour before the official 2 p.m. start time, a benefit added a few years ago when the opening rush began to resemble a Black Friday doorbuster. The excitement of the swap is just the beginning, however, as every day we inch a little bit closer to spring.
