Savannah DeMelo, a Bellflower native, is one of 14 players selected to their first U.S. women’s World Cup roster for the first time.
Savannah DeMelo started her second season in the NWSL still in search of her first appearance with the U.S. Women’s National Team. However, her performance this season with Racing Louisville FC, made it difficult for coach Vlatko Andonovski to ignore.
“I don’t take anything people tell as me criticism, I take it as an opportunity to grow and I think that’s what I was doing every single week,” DeMelo said. DeMelo sat out her junior season at USC, but returned to finish out 2020 and 2021 before heading to the NWSL. Before DeMelo became a soccer star, she participated in other sports like gymnastics, basketball and volleyball. She was a four-year starter at St. Joseph and earned Press-Telegram Player of the Year honors in 2014 as a sophomore.“I grew up watching Cristiano Ronaldo. I’m Portuguese and he’s a God at our house. Obviously as I got older, I played attacking mid, so Messi was a player I always thought was the best, did everything right, super creative, on-the-ball, off-the-ball, things like that.
