As the race to the 2024 elections begins to take shape, independent candidates are starting to enter the fold.on his morning walk with his dog Nawal and talks about why he will be standing for election as Member of Parliament. As we walk through the Company’s Garden, Zackie Achmat's dog Nawal stalks a squirrel. The squirrel, sensing the dog’s eyes on him, scurries away. A few moments later, Nawal goes for a hadeda. The loud creature flaps about and this time Achmat’s rescue dog barks and scares the bird a few metres from Parliament.
The city has risen and the overcast day is bustling with hawkers, the homeless, tourists and colourful lovers as they make use of the walkways in the gardens. Achmat points out a man who stores the hawkers belongings for safekeeping. He interacts with a homeless man, jokes with the lovers and greets the hawker – this is his comfort.
