A strange, half-shutdown SNL closed out 2021.
smiling from his saxophonist stool, there was Hanks on stage, once more lighting the way as worries of shutdown and breakthrough infections loomed. “Thank you, surviving crew members,” he told the husk of a room. He wore a natty velvet robe with a proud number 5 medallion stitched onto the breast, in honor of his elite status. If he was called in as kind of an emergency Santa Claus to save the Christmas show, fellow five-timerwas a much-appreciated Mrs. Claus.
One day, maybe we’ll return to the dipshit guilelessness of Rudd’s Adult One Direction fan. Children will gather in maskless scrums. Short will get himself a 5-timer blazer. We’ll have sensible gun control legislation. Public health won’t be politicized. Global warming won’t be pushed ever-down the list of our gargantuan concerns. Until then….
Go for a walk. Eat pie. Look for the helpers—and help them by wearing a mask. Bravo to those five on stage bidding us a spaced-out adieu at the end of a weird night. I hope after the credits rolled, they stole to the dressing room and cracked open a bottle of some good stuff and had some laughs about the horrible absurdity of it all. To us! Mired and resilient.
