In its 2021-22 annual report released Wednesday, SaskPower stated it produced a net income of $11 million, a 92-per-cent dropThe Crown corporation said while it’s in a strong financial position, the reduction in income was a result of lower hydro generation, which prompted SaskPower to spend more on other fuel sources, like coal, natural gas and wind.

Wind generation increased by 82 per cent for a total of 1,661 GWh. There were 12 GWh produced through solar power, an increase of 11 GWh in 2020-21. This is attributed to the opening of the Highfield Solar Energy Facility near Swift Current.Article content It paid $177 million in carbon taxes, an increase of 92 per cent from $92 million in 2020-21. As well, it collected $145 million in federal carbon charges from ratepayers, an increase of $16 million from $129 million in 2020-21.

While the corporation is adding more renewable energy sources into the mix, he said federal regulations will make it more challenging for the utility to continue to deliver its mandate of reliable, sustainable and cost-effective power.
