“I think he’s going to bring a lot of stability — that’s the word I’d use,” said Blades head coach Brennan Sonne, whose team is in Brandon to play the Wheat Kings on Friday night before returning home for a Thanksgiving weekend tilt Sunday afternoon against the Moose Jaw Warriors at SaskTel Centre. Last season, he had three goals and 12 assists for 15 points in 66 games with the Rebels. This is his fourth year in the league.“I woke up at 9 o’clock for a 10 o’clock check-in and Brent gave me a call,” Gustafson explained. “He said, ‘I want to talk to you.’ I was looking at the situation, all the 20-year-olds in Red Deer. I was looking around and we weren’t sure. At that point, I knew that it was an odd time for a meeting. I knew I was going somewhere. I was going to the rink just nervous.

“Saskatoon was on the radar a little bit with Crnkovic being traded out. You’re always looking around the league, looking for open 20 spots and then you’re looking for what guys need. Myself, as a very defensive defenceman, you look and you go, ‘OK, they’ve got a couple of offensive players here and they could use somebody to penalty kill.’ It was teams like Saskatoon and Seattle. They’re missing a 20-year-old and need a little bit of penalty-killers.
