Saskatoon police deputy chief Mitch Yuzdepski said there are some lower risk mental health calls that can and likely should be diverted to another agency, provided that agency offers that 24/7 support — which Mobile Crisis does. Field said what she likes best with the protocol is that it provides a better match of service to meet the need. They found, in looking at calls to police in July and August 2019 and January 2020, somewhere between 75 to 130 calls per month could be diverted to Mobile Crisis. People are also more aware of their own mental health or that of others around them, and they may be more aware of stressors in their lives and there’s more information and more support to talk about it and reach out, Field said.
