Officials from Saskatchewan, Ontario, New Brunswick and Alberta are expected to address the news conference.
An advisory sent last week regarding the announcement stated Crown Investments Minister and Minister Responsible for SaskPower Don Morgan, along with Todd Smith, Minister of Energy, Ontario, Mike Holland, Minister of Natural Resources and Energy Development, New Brunswick, and Sonya Savage, Minister of Energy, Alberta will address the news conference.
He said the small reactors can be used to help Saskatchewan lower its emissions given they don’t emit air pollution.“All of these are part of the discussion that is not only happening at SaskPower, but has to be part of a governmental discussion because of the far-reaching impacts of some of those choices,” he said.The federal government has set out a plan that requires provinces to phase-out coal by 2030. Ottawa also wants the country to produce net-zero emissions by 2035.
Saskatchewan has the largest high-grade uranium deposits in the world, but currently doesn’t use it for nuclear power in the province. Instead, the deposits are mined and exported. touting it as the first of four that could be built over a decade to generate 1,200 megawatts of emissions-free power.
