Sask. third most 'active' province for tornadoes in 2022: report

Although the most active provinces were Ontario (43 over land and eight over water) and Quebec (26), Saskatchewan placed in a strong third place with 25.

“We don’t believe it’s so much a case of climate change really ramping up the number of tornadoes. It’s really that we’re getting a more accurate picture of the number of tornadoes occurring across Canada,” said Northern Tornadoes Project executive director David Sills.

Of the 34 events surveyed by NTP teams in 2022, 24 were in Ontario, five in Alberta, three in Québec, and two in Saskatchewan. Other events with casualties were the July 24 Rockdale-Actinolite EF2 tornado in Ontario, with at least six people injured, and the July 7 Bergen EF2 tornado in Alberta, with one injured.

That twister touched down around 2:30 p.m., injuring one and causing extensive damage. The EF2 tornado had a 5.7-km swath and formed a maximum width of 600 metres — but its most distinct characteristic was its strange path.Article content It was a busy season across the country, with the 117 total tornadoes logged by the Western University team matching a record high.
