He started talking to a psychologist, who helped him to shift away from his negative thought patterns.
His first choice was to go into something that would involve familiar work with his hands — an X-ray, MRI or diagnostic technician. But he learned even that would be more physically demanding than his body could manage. “A lot of what they do has such an incredible influence on the patient care and the outcomes of patients themselves.”Advertisement 6Michael McGill and his wife, Lesley, at the Inner Harbour in Victoria, B.C., where McGill works for Island Health as the manager of information stewardship, audit and privacy.His first job out of school required him and Lesley to move to Saskatoon.
“I get to be a part of the team that protects some of the most sensitive information that you have as a person … It’s a really neat feeling, and a really neat job to have,” he says. “They would invite future employers for all of the many programs that Sask Polytech had … And so, I met and made some relationships with some of the hiring people with the Cancer Agency,” he recalls.
McGill has always felt it was important to give back to Sask Polytech, he said. While working in his desired field after acquiring his diploma, he also did a lot of work with students in the HIM program.
