Sars dismantles coal-smuggling syndicates that exacerbate load shedding
Sars was the lead agency in Thursday’s search-and-seizure operation, following information about a host of tax crimes allegedly committed by members of the coal-smuggling syndicate.The SA Revenue Service , together with other state agencies, has announced the dismantling of a coal-smuggling syndicate that has played a major role in the current load shedding crisis, costing the fiscus R500 million.
The committee is tasked with unmasking and bringing to book criminals who have caused economic and personal hardship among South Africans.The alleged coal smugglers and their related entities are active and are present in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State and Limpopo. The agency explains that coal trucks destined for power stations are diverted to designated coal yards where high-grade coal is replaced with low-grade or sub-standard products.
