SARS clarifies new ‘travel pass’ for South Africa – this is how it works

The tax authority SARS has taken to clarify the new system to be trialled at airports across the country that ensures security and accurate information collection.

The South African Revenue Service has clarified the rollout of the new South African Traveller Online Declaration System.

This new system is planned to be rolled out at Durban’s King Shaka International Airport on 29 November 2022. This will be on a voluntary basis, the tax authority added. Traditional declarations in paper form and notoriously known to take up travellers’ time and be a thorn in administrative processes, said Theron.

Under SARs new SMART border project, the new declaration system will be voluntary at all ports of entry in 2023 and 2024; however, it may become mandatory at some stage, said Theron.
