Sarma Melngailis, the subject of the new docuseries BadVegan, speaks on what happened then and where she is now: 'I want this stuff to be useful, not merely fodder for people's creepy entertainment.'
“There’s this assumption I must have gone through specialized therapy. But am I going to pay $500 an hour for some specialist? It’s awkward when I’m on the hook for so much money. If some specialist, a quality one, wanted to use me as a case study in exchange for treatment, hell yes, I’d offer up myself and my thoughts. I want my situation to be useful.
It didn’t seem to matter that she might have been so far gone in whatever madness was playing out that she didn’t fully realize what was happening at the restaurant. Images in news coverage of picketing Pure Food and Wine servers, bartenders, and kitchen staff understandably hit home. Investors, a landlord, and creditors were out millions combined, but it was the roughly $63,000 owed to employees that hurt her image—and also hurt Melngailis—most.
Melngailis was not shown the series until March 4, less than two weeks before its release. There is a lot she likes about it, including some reenactments. Another point Melngailis wants to make: “The impression in the doc is I intentionally married Anthony so he could transfer me money. That is completely not the case. At some point, Anthony did some of his mindfuckery and got me to marry him.”Melngailis has come to embrace it.
