KUCHING: Sarawak has recorded its first Covid-19 cases, with three people testing positive for the virus.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah said two cases were from the cluster who attended a religious gathering at the Sri Petaling Mosque in Kuala Lumpur on Feb 28-March 1, while the third was a family member."We are appealing to all those who attended that gathering and who are in Sarawak to immediately contact the nearest hospital for Covid-19 investigation," Uggah, who is state disaster management committee chairman, said in a statement on Friday .

He said so far the state Health Department had traced 236 Sarawakian participants and was continuing to trace the rest. Of those tracked, 173 are under home surveillance while 63 are persons under investigation for Covid-19. Uggah assured the public that the Health Department was prepared to face any eventuality from Covid-19 at its designated hospitals, which are the Sarawak General Hospital here, Sibu Hospital, Bintulu Hospital and Miri Hospital.

He also said quarantine centres had been set up in Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri and were ready for operation.
