White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders dodged multiple questions Monday about whether President Donald Trump thinks Democrats hate Jews, as he was reported to have said during a fundraiser last weekend
Nearly two dozen Republicans broke from the party line to vote against the resolution in protest over the measure being watered down, and many — including Trump and Vice President Mike Pence — have called for Omar’s removal from the high-profile Foreign Affairs Committee.
Sanders on Monday shifted blame for anti-Semitism controversies to Democratic leaders, who have condemned the language Omar used but mostly defended her against charges that she is an anti-Semite. “Frankly, the remarks that have been made by a number of Democrats and fail to be called out by Democrat leadership is, frankly, abhorrent and sad and it's something that should be called by name. It shouldn't be put in a watered-down resolution,” she said.
Two reporters followed up with Sanders in an attempt to get a more direct answer from her, but she again sidestepped the question, saying that she would not “comment on leaked information” but arguing that when GOP Rep. Steve King made racist remarks earlier this year, he was unilaterally condemned by his party and ultimately stripped of his committee memberships.
“The president has had and laid out clearly his position on this matter,” she said. “Democrats have had a number of opportunities to condemn specific comments and have refused to do that. That's a question frankly I think you should ask Democrats, what their position is, since they're unwilling to call this what it is and call it out by name and take actual action against members who have done things like this like the Republicans have done when they had the same opportunity.
