Saquon Barkley returned to MetLife Stadium with the Eagles and made the Giants pay for letting him leave.
The No. 26 jerseys and T-shirts were doused with lighter fluid and draped on a fence in the MetLife Stadium parking lot. Mike Carpentieri and his pals have tailgated in lot D-10 for years, so they knew the Philadelphia Eagles team buses would drive directly pass them on Sunday afternoon as they arrived for this game against the Giants.
Even so, he said he was not quite prepared for this level of vitriol. Pro athletes often insist that they don’t hear the crowd taunting them, as if it is admitting to a weakness if they acknowledge that their ears are functional. Barkley wasn’t pretending.“That was CRAZY!” he said. “I mean, I’ve seen my jersey get burned before on social media, but the timing of it? I’m locked in, I’m listening to my music , and all I see is fans pointing.
“I’m thankful for that organization,” said Barkley, who spent most of the post-game press conference running on the high road for the team that picked him second overall in 2018. “I’ve still got nothing but love and respect for the guys over there. I’m happy to be an Eagle, and what’s important to me is that we got a win against a division rival.”
The Giants made it clear that they didn’t want to re-sign him, and the entire saga unfolded as the biggest plot line forthis summer. “We’re not going to go there. We’re out,” general manager Joe Schoen said during a phone call on the show when told that Barkley’s free agent deal in Philadelphia would guarantee him $26 million.
