The family of a 5-year-old who died in an accidental shooting in Utah County released a statement asking other families to “ensure the safety” of their own chil

The boy died Thursday afternoon after officials said he grabbed a handgun in a room of his home. The gun went off, striking a fatal blow.

“The Wilson and Hunsaker families experienced an unimaginable tragedy, losing a cherished member who will be deeply missed,” the family statement read.Lt. Mike Wall from the Santaquin Police Department said the boy’s parents were in another room of their house when they heard the gunshot. The father administered CPR until medical crews arrived at the scene, who took over lifesaving efforts.Lt. Wall said it appeared to be an accidental shooting, and no charges were expected to be filed.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family, and also our officers," Wall told KUTV. "We will continue to check on responding officers to make sure they’re okay, because most of them also have children."Family members said they hoped their tragedy motivated others to take "every precaution" to protect their children.

“This heartbreaking incident has taught us difficult lessons, and we deeply regret that it unfolded this way," the statement read. "Our hearts are shattered, and we hope that our family's loss serves as a poignant reminder of how quickly life can change.""On August 22, 2024, the Wilson and Hunsaker families experienced an unimaginable tragedy, losing a cherished member who will be deeply missed.
