October 23, 2020 -- Macy’s announced Thursday that a real, live Santa Claus won’t be appearing at the company’s flagship store in New York City this year to hear children’s Christmas wishes.
To reduce chances of spreading the coronavirus, the store will offer an interactive virtual experience called “Macy’s Santaland at Home,” the store said in a ThursdaySanta also won’t appear at the stores in Chicago and San Francisco, which also have elaborate Santaland displays inside the stores. The decision ends a 160-year tradition. Since 1861, children have been sitting on Santa’s lap at Macy’s and sharing their Christmas wish-list, Macy’s said.
“At Macy’s, the safety of our customers and colleagues is paramount,” said Susan Tercero, Macy’s vice president of branded entertainment. “To replicate the magical experience of visiting Macy’s Santaland for children and their families, we will shift to a virtual engagement this year. “For many, visiting Santa at Macy’s has become a long-standing highlight of the holiday season. Macy’s is delighted to have found a way to ensure even more families can enjoy this treasured experience safely during this festive time of the year.”Macy’s has long called itself “The Home of Santa Claus,” and in the 1947 movie “Miracle on 34th Street,” a little girl discovered Santa inside the store.will not wind 2.5 miles through the streets of New York City this year.
