"It's kind of a push-pull of 'How do I keep him safe and also let him live in the world that he lives in?' Santa Rosa County parent Melissa Atha said. The Santa Rosa County School District is partnering with "Smart Social" to give parents more guidance."I didn't grow up with technology, but he is. So we're definitely approaching it from two different perspectives," Atha said."You may think your kids are safe in the corner of the house with headphones on, but they're actually a million miles away chatting with people who are teaching them things that you don't want them to learn," Smart Social founder John Ochs said."We can talk about tricky people in the real world," she said. "We can get that message through. But what we didn't think about was tricky people hiding online. People pretending to be children in gaming platforms that are not.""Strangers online are very good at manipulating kids in some ways," Ochs said. "And making the kids feel very comfortable to give them information and so on.""I convinced him that this was something that was really important," Atha said. "And honestly, it opened up dialogue between the two of them that I never imagined. I mean, that communication pathway between the two of us is so important."
