The unassuming 1950s housewife could become California's first-ever saint.

woman is one step closer to becoming a saint after her cause advanced last week at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.. When she was 20, she married in a Mormon church, and it was there that she said she lost her faith after enduring a series of marriage rituals. She went off in search of a new truth, but life first dealt Evans a horrific tragedy: the death of her infant son. Some time after, Evans was listening to a Catholic radio program and became intrigued by the religion.

Since 2012, the Diocese of Monterey has been shepherding Evans' case for canonization. Bishop of Monterey Daniel E. Garcia said at the USCCB's Plenary Assembly on Wednesday that"many have received favors through her intercession" since Evans' death.
