A portion of the Santa Cruz Pier has collapsed and is floating away due to high surf conditions. The National Weather Service warns of dangerous wave heights and potential life-threatening swimming conditions.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the Santa Cruz Pier has partially collapsed and is floating away amid a high surf warning. The NWS Bay Area account on Monday posted to X, formerly Twitter, saying, 'A portion of the Santa Cruz Pier has collapsed, and is floating away. Look at the ominous wave action on the horizon. You are risking your life, and those of the people that would need to try and save you by getting in or too close to the water.

' Wave heights in the area have exceeded 20 feet the NWS says. In a post on X, the NWS Bay Area advised residents to observe from a 'VERY SAFE distance.' At Point Sur, the waves were approaching 26 feet, the NWS notes. In the high surf warning, the NWS says that large waves can pull people into the sea from rocks or jetties without warning. 'Cold water shock' is also possible, the NWS warns, which could 'result in dramatic changes in breathing, heart rate and blood pressure, greatly increasing the risk of drowning in rough open waters.'According to local news station KION-TV, citing the Santa Cruz fire department, three people fell into the water and two needed to be rescued by firefighters. The other got out of the water safely
