41st annual event continues Sunday with professional chefs competing for prizes, bragging rights

Chowderheads descended on the Santa Cruz Boardwalk on Saturday for the annual Clam Chowder Cook-Off.

The event, now in its 41st year, returned to its traditional format after a pandemic pivot to a drive-thru festival in 2021. The popular two-day cookoff raises funds for the city of Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation Department. Last year’s amount totaled more than $90,000, Boardwalk spokesman Kris Reyes said.

Amateur chefs competed on Saturday for prizes and bragging rights in the categories of Boston style, Manhattan style, Most Tasted and People’s Choice. Professional chefs will square off on Sunday. Tasting kits will go on sale at 10 a.m., and the public tasting will begin at 1 p.m.
