From the seemingly endless pandemic, we are, at this point, willfully ignoring , to the January 6th hearings, to the daily nightmare of yet another gun massacre, to the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the stripping away of the reproductive rights of millions, it’s difficult to stay optimistic about the future.... [+]

Marches and rallies have been held in dozens of cities across the country since the killing of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis on May 25. But there is reason to look for brightness in these dark days, and there is plenty to be found.

In the grand scheme of things, no, this isn’t the same thing as being, say, the first woman on the Moon or first woman U.S. president , but it’s worth remarking upon and celebrating. These steps matter. We all know the damage the pandemic has done to women’s economic prospects; we still haven’t recovered pre-pandemic women’s employment levels, and while we are getting there, women account for fully three-quarters of jobs still unrecovered.

So, it was with great excitement that I welcomed the news about Sandra Douglass Morgan. Formerly the first Black chairwoman of Nevada’s gaming control board, Morgan is taking the helm of a team that’s no stranger to historic firsts, including hiring the first Black head coach in 1989 and the first woman chief executive in 1997. And while this is only one job, in light of all the statistics above, it’s still a reason for hope.

Football runs deep in my family; my parents, my husband, and my sons, one of whom is a Giants fanatic studying Sport Management in college, are all huge fans, and the men in my family have always had role models in their favorite coaches and players. But girls need those, too, and girls who love football shouldn’t need to spend their lives never seeing themselves represented in it.
