Holiday shopping projections show a slight increase, but some San Ysidro businesses are struggling due to border wait times and the rise of online shopping.
The National Retail Federation (NRF) predicts holiday shoppers will spend up to nearly $990 billion nationwide, a 3% increase compared to last year. San Ysidro, a border town, relies on shoppers from both sides. Bargain Zone, a family-run store for 17 years, reports fewer customers this year, blaming longer wait times at the border. Carmen Salazar De La Cruz, a customer, waited four hours to cross into the US, stating US prices are cheaper than in Mexico.
Bargain Zone managers also attribute the decline to the rise of online shopping, which saw a 10% increase in Black Friday sales compared to last year, while in-store traffic fell 8%. Deal Hunterz, another San Ysidro store, offers discounted returned items from major retailers. Despite the NRF's projection, sales at Deal Hunterz remain similar to last year. The San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce was contacted for comment but has not yet responded
