A San Mateo County gun buyback event Saturday will give up to $200 in exchange for unloaded firearms, according to the county’s Sheriff’s Office.

SAN MATEO COUNTY — Officials will pay as much as $200 for unloaded firearms Saturday as part of the San Mateo County Gun Buy-Back Program, which hosts two events per year.

Running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the North County Courthouse at 1050 Mission Road in South San Francisco, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office alongside other agencies will purchase guns from the public with no questions asked, according to a news release. “Our gun buyback event provides a safe and anonymous way for community members to turn in firearms they no longer need or want,” said Sheriff Christina Corpus. “By participating in this event, you are helping to keep our communities safer by reducing the number of guns in circulation. We encourage all residents to consider taking advantage of this opportunity to make a positive impact in our community.

The county will pay $50 for non-functioning firearms, $100 for handguns, shotguns or rifles and $200 for assault weapons as classified by the State of California. All guns must be unloaded and transported in the trunks of vehicles.
