The FBI raid of San Leandro Councilman Bryan Azevedo's home has shed new light on potential ties between the Duong family, at the center of an alleged bribery scheme in Oakland, and city officials in San Leandro.
The FBI raid of San Leandro Councilman Bryan Azevedo's home on January 15, 2025, has taken on a new dimension in light of the federal bribery and conspiracy charges filed against former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, her romantic partner Andre Jones, and father-son business associates David and Andy Duong. While Azevedo has not been accused of any wrongdoing, the ongoing investigation promises further scrutiny of his interactions with the Duong family.
Azevedo had participated in a group trip to Vietnam in 2023, hosted by Andy Duong and funded by a trade organization largely comprised of Duong family members, according to city records. Additionally, the Duong family donated approximately $5,000 to Azevedo's election campaigns, both directly and through a business entity. This connection raises questions about potential influence peddling, particularly given the alleged bribery scheme unfolding in Oakland. The alleged Oakland corruption involves Thao accepting bribes from the Duongs in exchange for political favors, a $95,000 payment to Jones, and promises to secure lucrative contracts for the Duong family's businesses. In San Leandro, there were no concrete deals secured between the city and the Duong family's businesses, California Waste Solutions or Evolutionary Homes. However, Evolutionary Homes representatives proposed to city officials the declaration of a state of emergency on homelessness, seemingly seeking a smoother path to sell tiny homes directly to the city. San Leandro city leaders ultimately rejected this proposal, opting for a more collaborative approach with the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. Interestingly, California Waste Solutions did not appear to be a serious contender for San Leandro's garbage and recycling contract when the city explored new options in 2023.
