Parade route starts near the BART station at 10 a.m.
A festival that was first held in 1909 — when San Leandro was home to acres and acres of orchards rather than subdivisions — will make a post-pandemic comeback Saturday., last held in 2019, will feature the traditional parade and cherry pie-baking contests, fresh cherries and cherry desserts to buy, music, live music, a beer garden and a fun zone for kids — plus a new pie-eating contest.
More than 55 units, including the San Leandro High School band and the Portuguese Society Band, will march in the parade, which kicks off at 10 a.m. from the San Leandro BART station. The parade will then go down Parrot Street, head north on East 14th Street toward the San Leandro Main Library on Estudillo Avenue. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and admission is free. The Downtown San Leandro district group is organizing the event with the city of San Leandro.
Youths, however, are welcome to compete in the pie-baking contest. No pre-registration is necessary. Entries in three categories — Traditional Pies, Non-Traditional Pies and Kids’ Pies — must be dropped off between 11 and 11:30 a.m. at the Pie Contest Booth. Participants may enter in more than one category.
Despite the city’s noted agricultural history, the festival has been held only sporadically over the years. According to Bay Area News Group archives, at that first festival in 1909 San Leandro’s Board of Trade promoted the city by distributing 15 tons of cherries. The event featured not one but three parades, as well as concerts, a baseball game and motorcycle races. At the grand ball, a local woman named Bessie Best was voted “cherry queen.
