San Jose has appointed former Olympian Tommy O’Hare as its new sports and special events director. This appointment comes as the city prepares to host several major events, including Super Bowl LX in 2026 and six World Cup matches in 2024. O’Hare, who represented the U.S. in short-track relay at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He most recently served as the general manager of ClipperVision, the direct-to-consumer streaming platform for the L.A.
Clippers.O’Hare’s responsibilities will encompass coordinating activities surrounding these high-profile events, with a focus on maximizing the opportunity to showcase San Jose and its economy. City officials believe these events will generate significant economic activity, with estimates ranging from $100 million to $160 million for the Super Bowl and $270 million to $360 million for the World Cup. To capitalize on this influx of visitors, San Jose has allocated $350,000 in its budget for the dedicated 12-month position. Mayor Matt Mahan considers this investment one of the most significant for 2026, emphasizing the city’s commitment to hosting unforgettable experiences for both residents and visitors. O’Hare will collaborate with partners like the Sports Authority and TeamSJ to ensure these events contribute to the growth of San Jose’s sports and entertainment economy in the long run.In addition to his Olympic achievements, O’Hare boasts a diverse professional background.
