SJSU has rushed for over 100 yards in five of their seven games and ran for a season-high 259 yards against New Mexico last weekend.
SAN JOSE — San Jose State has relied on the passing game as the catalyst of the offense during the Brent Brennan era, but the Spartans might have found a new identity running the football.
Despite SJSU returning Chevan Cordeiro, a second-team All-Mountain West quarterback last season, coach Brent Brennan said he wanted to establish a more efficient run game this season.
Despite missing the second game of the season against Oregon State with a lower leg injury, Robinson has rushed for 471 yards at 6.5 yards per carry. The De La Salle product has an outside shot at becoming SJSU’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Tyler Ervin in 2015. Overall, SJSU has rushed for over 100 yards in five of the seven games played this season. The Spartans ran for a season-high 259 yards against New Mexico.Conley, a power back, rushed 123 yards and a touchdown against New Mexico. The Utah Tech transfer saw his touches dip since the start of the season, but continues to produce in short-yardage and goal-line situations.
Utah State is allowing 163 rushing yards per game and 4.09 yards per carry. The Aggies lost 37-32 to Fresno State last week and had little success slowing Bulldogs running back Malik Sherrod, who rushed for 131 yards and three touchdowns.“We’re just trying to get this thing going,” Robinson said about the run game. “The first half of the season hasn’t gone the way we wanted it to, so hopefully this gives us a little momentum going into the second half of the season.
“He’s got a great arm and he can throw on the move,” Brennan said. “Having a good player like they have in the last few years makes them really hard to defend.”Saturday’s game will be the one-year anniversary of Camdan McWright’s death. McWright died in a traffic accident last season at the age of 18.
