San Jose police said the officer that was shot Wednesday morning is in “critical but stable” condition.
SAN JOSE — The San Jose police officerWednesday morning remained in critical, but stable condition as of Thursday, according to authorities. In a statement posted to social media at 11:39 a.m., the San Jose Police Department confirmed that the officer, only identified as a woman and 10-year veteran of the department, was stabilized after she was struck by gunfire in the upper body.
“We are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support we have received from our community and understand that this shocking incident takes a heavy toll on all of us,” a portion of the statement reads. “We ask that you continue to keep our brave sister officer in your prayers for a speedy recovery.” The shooting happened at a condominium complex near Auzerais Avenue and Race Street around 8 a.m., after a woman who lives there called police and reported that her husband was drunk, had tried to hit her and broke down a bathroom door, Police Chief Anthony Mata said in a news conference Wednesday evening. Within 30 seconds of their arrival, the officer and her partner called up to the second-story home and identified themselves. That’s when the suspect exited onto a balcony and fired a shot, the chief said, adding that the officers did not return fire. The officer’s partner then moved her to a place of safety and began to treat her injuries, Mata said.
