The city’s new vaccination policy at public facilities like the SAP Center waters down its previous vaccination order.

Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases fueled by the omicron variant, San Jose is about to become the first city in California to require all of its employees to get a booster shot in addition to the initial vaccine doses mandated earlier.

While other jurisdictions like Contra Costa and Santa Clara counties have enacted booster mandates for certain frontline employees such as first responders and health care workers, San Jose’s order will apply to its full workforce of approximately 7,000 people, as well as any new hires.

City spokesperson Carolina Camarena said Wednesday that city administrators are still negotiating details of the requirement with the various labor unions and no deadline for compliance has been set yet. Santa Clara County has one of the highest vaccination rates in the country with 82.5% of all its residents fully vaccinated. San Jose’s workforce has an even higher vaccination rate, with more than 95% of city employees fully vaccinated, according to the city. The coronavirus case rate for unvaccinated individuals in Santa Clara County is nearly 30% higher than that of those who are fully vaccinated, according the county’s COVID-19 data dashboard.
