The city’s most popular park is being looked at as a potential location for “Breeze of Innovation,” as its currently approved site is presenting challenges.
It could be “Goodbye, Arena Green” and “Hello, Plaza de Cesar Chavez” for Urban Confluence Silicon Valley’s planned landmark in downtown San Jose.
Plaza de Cesar Chavez — which is home to some beloved San Jose events like Christmas in the Park and San Jose Jazz Summer Fest — was the site the organization had initially envisioned for the project before an initial site study recommended Arena Green, a section of the Guadalupe River Park near SAP Center.
Environmental groups including the Sierra Club and the Audubon Society have argued against placing the 200-foot-high project, consisting of 500 dynamic rods that would be illuminated at night, so close to the Guadalupe River and Los Gatos Creek, where it could disrupt birds and other wildlife and add unnatural light to the riparian corridor. Borkenhagen said most of the other sites initially considered would have the same problems, with the exceptions of Plaza de Cesar Chavez and St.
“We think that the combination of ‘Breeze’ and various elements yet to be designed that honor Cesar Chavez could make that park — which we currently believe is a mediocre urban park — something really spectacular,” he said.
