San Jose eection results: Chavez, Mahan lead mayoral race
In the closely watched race for San Jose mayor, Santa Clara County Supervisor Cindy Chavez has emerged from Tuesday’s primary election as the frontrunner, marking a notable turnaround from 16 years ago when she was walloped by former mayor Chuck Reed.
The rivalry between Chavez and Mahan sets the stage for a likely historic spending battle for the fall, with the outcome of the race set to affect the course of Silicon Valley’s largest city for years to come, on issues from affordable housing and development to crime. The chosen candidate will take the seat of Sam Liccardo, a business-backed moderate Democrat who has held the mayorship for the past eight years.
Chavez received endorsements and more than $1 million in financial support from groups like the South Bay Labor Council and the San Fransisco 49ers. Mahan was backed by the Silicon Valley BIZ PAC and a fundraising group launched by Liccardo. Mahan, on the other hand, organized his campaign around an action call for changing “the status quo” in local politics, vowing to bring more results and accountability to the city’s highest elected office.
