Oscar Jonesy, a 43-year-old endangered Western lowland gorilla, passed away at the San Francisco Zoo following a medical procedure. Despite initial signs of recovery, he suddenly stopped breathing and could not be revived.
Officials at the San Francisco Zoo confirmed on Friday the death of their 43-year-old endangered Western lowland gorilla, Oscar Jonesy, following a medical procedure on Thursday afternoon. Zoo officials stated that Oscar Jonesy was the third oldest male of his species residing in a U.S. zoo. Tanya Peterson, CEO and Executive Director of the San Francisco Zoo , expressed her sorrow, saying, 'We are heartbroken by the loss of Oscar.
He was truly an amazing ambassador for this critically endangered species and a favorite among staff, guests, and volunteers alike. I thank our incredible animal care teams and the multiple medical specialists who participated to mitigate the risks associated with any medical procedure, especially in an aging great ape. We are grateful for the opportunity to have known Oscar and remain awed by his nobility and quiet strength.'Dr. Adrian Mutlow, the zoo's Chief Veterinarian, explained that the procedure proceeded well and Oscar exhibited initial signs of recovery from anesthesia. However, he suddenly became unresponsive and stopped breathing. Despite immediate response and assistance from critical care specialists from Stanford, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. Dr. Mutlow noted that while no serious illness was detected during the examination, the definitive cause of death remains unknown. Further information is expected following a necropsy examination conducted at UC Davis Veterinary School
